What is Shifting?
Reality shifting is the ability to shift one’s awareness to another reality, typically achieved by entering deep states of consciousness through meditation. The goal of reality shifting is to connect with the version of yourself that exists in the reality you want to go to. People commonly use it to shift into and experience their favorite TV shows, movies, books, or even parallel or original realities. Shifting blew up on TikTok in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, after people posted videos about how they shifted to Hogwarts. However, the practice dates back further, with many individuals sharing life-like experiences in another reality before waking up in their original reality, unsure whether what they experienced was real.
What Shifting is NOT
- Shifting is NOT lucid dreaming. You can shift realities while asleep or awake, whereas lucid dreaming is purely an asleep activity that occurs during REM sleep. Reality shifting is guided by intention and maintains your conscious awareness, while your subconscious mostly shapes your lucid dreaming experiences. In reality shifting, during a fully grounded shift, a person will have all 5 senses (sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell) and be completely coherent while experiencing a vivid reality. In lucid dreams, the dreamer can control their dream and its contents. Lucid dreams also don’t make sense most of the time, with physics and body parts not adding up (such as missing or extra fingers). In reality shifting, that reality is just as real as this one; you cannot have complete control over it, just like you can’t in this one. It is literally another life with real universal laws, such as time, energy, gravity, and so on (of course, unless you decide to alter these laws in your DR).
- Shifting is NOT teleportation; you are not physically leaving your body or universe. Your body stays in this reality while your conscious awareness is shifting to another version of you in another reality. You will not suddenly disappear into thin air and reappear out of nowhere in your DR. Your CR and DR selves will always exist in their respective realities; you are just shifting your awareness between the two at a deeper, conscious level.
- Shifting is NOT a medical or psychological condition (dissociation, psychosis, etc.). This is VERY harmful misinformation that has made a lot of people (also called anti-shifters) against the idea of shifting because they wrongfully dismiss shifters as mentally ill or unstable. The ability to shift is built into our cosmic makeup as humans and is NOT the result of mental illness.
- Shifting is NOT one size fits all. Everyone’s shifting journey is unique and their own, and shifters should not compare their journeys to other shifters. No two shifters will have the same journey, because no two shifters have the same lives or circumstances. Appreciate and love your journey, and focus on yourself before looking to others for the answers you seek, because they are already within you.
- Shifting is NOT a replacement for real life. Your life in this reality matters, and shifting should not be used to avoid responsibilities or problems. Some people get defensive around this topic, but I believe it is important to remind and inform people of how unhealthy escapism is in the shifting community. If you feel offended by this, then you may want to reevaluate why you feel that way. Escapism and avoidance can do more harm than one may realize, both in one’s shifting journey and in one’s mental health. It is understandable that many people want to escape this reality for valid reasons, such as health and/or living conditions, and it is perfectly okay to want to shift to a different reality. Still, one must not let it get to the point of neglecting one’s physical and mental health while being so focused on reaching their DR. This can damage one’s relationship with shifting, which will only set one back in the long run. If you find that you struggle with this, please step away from shifting and focus on your health. Your well-being is most important; seek professional help if you are able.
- Shifting is NOT against any religion. There are countless people from various walks of life, beliefs, and religions who shift, and one must not limit oneself to a life-changing experience out of fear of going against one’s religion.
Common Terminology
- Desired Reality (DR) = The reality you are intending to shift to (ex., “I am planning on shifting to my Hogwarts DR tonight.”)
- Current Reality (CR) = The reality you are currently experiencing a life in physically (ex., “I am leaving my CR,” “I shifted back to my CR.”)
- Original Reality (OR) = The original reality you came from; it is interchangeable with CR for the most part.
- Waiting Room (WR) = A pocket-like reality that you shift to before your DR, or just a compact reality that you can shift to to take a break from your CR. It is used if you want to become grounded and prepare yourself before experiencing your DR. Many people have transit points (like doors or portals) in these WRs that direct them to their different DR’s.
- Parallel Reality (PR) = A reality that is very similar to your CR/OR, with some key differences. You may also see people use “Alternate Reality” interchangeably.
- Shifting Method = Methods that are used to help you shift. There are awake (for shifting while awake) and asleep (for shifting while asleep) methods that include varying steps such as counting, breathwork, visualization, affirmations, thinking like your DR self, and so on. You can create your own methods, use methods created by others, or not use any at all. It is important to remember that methods don’t MAKE you shift; YOU do.
- Shifting Symptoms = Sensations you may experience during a shifting attempt or while shifting, such as tingling, floating, vibrations, heaviness, numbness, hearing voices or sounds, dizziness, physical touches, seeing flashing lights or colors, and many more. Not everyone experiences shifting symptoms, and you DO NOT need to have symptoms to shift. Everyone experiences shifting differently, so don’t feel that you are failing because you are not having the symptoms that someone else may have had when they shifted.
- Script/Scripting = A written (physical or digital) outline of your DR.

Scripting
A script can be in any form you prefer, whether it is on your phone in your Notes app, the Notion app, on a single sheet of paper, or in a journal. Your script can include many things, such as information about you, your appearance, relationships, rules, powers/abilities, backstory, memories, and anything else you may want to include. You can make your script as decorative or thematic as you want or as simple as you want. Many people enjoy creating their own script, while others hate it. A script is NOT required to shift, but it helps outline specific things you want to ensure are applied to the reality you are shifting to—script as much or as little as you want.
However, safety is VERY important, and one should not skip it, regardless of whether one has a script. Safety entails any rules/info one may need to include in one’s DR that will keep them safe while in that reality (especially potentially dangerous DR’s).
Examples: “I have a high pain tolerance,” “I can only die of natural causes or of old age,” “I will never be seriously injured.”
Use your discretion to determine what you may need in your safety script/section, or reference others’ scripts online for inspiration.

Pillow Method — Writing affirmations or scripts and placing them under your pillow.
Elevator Method — Visualizing riding an elevator to a higher vibrational floor (your DR).
Heartbeat Method — Imagining lying on someone in your DR and syncing to their heartbeat.
Train Method — Visualizing boarding a train that takes you to your DR.
